Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay wrote The Federalist Papers between October 1787 and August 1788 as a collection of newspaper essays in defense of the Constitution.
Writing under a pen name, they explain the merits of the proposed Constitution, while confronting objections raised by its opponents. Thomas Jefferson described the work as “the best commentary on the principles of government, which ever was written.”
As the Constitution comes under attack today, The Federalist Papers is still one of the most respected texts written in its defense.
